Well-illustrated account of the tours George Francis White (1808-1898) took in the direction of Mussoore, Simla, and the sources of the Jumna and Ganges, in 1829, 1831, and 1832. Much of his sketches were reworked or enlarged by noted artists of the day, such as J. M. W. Turner, to be turned into engravings for this present work. White spent over twenty years in the 31st Regiment of Foot in the British Army stationed in India, rising to Lieutenant-Colonel before retiring his commission and becoming the Chief Constable of Durham Constabulary upon his return to England.

Second edition; 4to (34.5 x 27.5 cm); 29 hand-coloured engraved plates by Finden and others after Turner, Allom, Stanfield, and others, including frontispiece, additional engraved title with hand-coloured vignette, some very light scattered spotting, ownership inscription to front publisher's blank; original publisher's cloth rebacked in calf, boards blocked in blind with gilt pictorial motif to upper board, spine lettered in gilt in five compartments, later marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, boards slightly rubbed, otherwise a very good copy; x, 84, 4pp.
