Silwan is a predominantly Palestinian neighbourhood on the outskirts of the Old City of Jerusalem, which also includes a small Jewish minority among it's residents. Silwan began as a farming village, dating back to the 7th century, while the earliest mention of the village is from the year 985, when it was first mentioned in the writings of the medieval Arab geographer Al-Muqaddasī.

Silwan is located southwest of the Old City Walls and constitutes part of the Jerusalem's 'Holy Basin' (the geographical area of Jerusalem that includes the Old City and its adjacent territories). In the beginning of the 20th century it's population was about 500 people.
