This guide was originally published by John Murray who started to published his own guides in the 1830s. Starke was a well known traveller and author and her guides were popular with the nineteenth century traveller before the age of railways. She was one of the first to recognise that practical information should be included in guide books and many consider her to be the pioneer of the modern day travel guide. Her last travel guide was published in 1839.
