Stanford's Library Map of Asia

The 1869 issue of Stanford's Library Map of Asia.

The Stanfords took over the Society for Diffusion of useful Knowledge in 1857 and started to issue the Library Maps in 1859, with 'Australasia' as the first title. The first edition of Asia was printed in 1862 and was one of the more important regions. An informative and highly decorative map of a region in the aftermath of the Indian Rebellion,

Engraved map, dissected and mounted on linen in four sheets, original hand-colour, folding into marbled ends, slightly toned with some rubbing to a few panels and ink blots to one or two, neat crayon in a near-contemporary hand drawing the overland route from Cairo to Turfan and Kandahar, publisher's original black morocco slip case, gilt lettering to spine, worn with loss of cover flap, a good example.
