Upton, a Captain in the Royal Lancers, saw the superiority of Arab horses during the Crimean War and was tasked by Henry Chaplin, later President of the Board of Agriculture, to go to the British Consul in Aleppo to aid in the acquisition of Arab horses, which he did twice between 1870 and 1875.
First edition; 8vo; hand-coloured steel engraved frontispiece, 4 folding equine genealogical charts at rear (one with short closed tear), publisher's catalogue at rear, ink ownership signature to front free endpaper, scattered light foxing, heavier to endpapers; original russet cloth gilt, bound by Burn & Co (ticket to rear pastedown), corners and spine ends a little rubbed, else a very good copy.
