Andrew Paton, author and diplomat, spent much of his career travelling in Eastern European states, Egypt and Syria. The present work resulted from Paton's unofficial employment by Sir Robert Gordon, Viennese ambassador, who in 1846, commissioned the author to report on Austrian ports in the Adriatic.
