There are two variants of this edition, one was issued in 1862 and the other in 1863. The coloured frontispiece displaying the coats of arms of the cantons of Switzerland only appears in the editions from 1854 to 1867. The Swiss Alpine Club was founded in 1863. A rare example of an early Baedeker edition.
