first edition

A very scarce first edition which rarely appears on the market.

This English edition served as a basis for the German edition published later in 1889. Ireland was never included in the English edition. Issued August 1887.

First edition. lxii, 530 pp; 14 maps, 24 plans, and a panorama. Publisher's red cloth gilt, non-pareil edges. Occasional dust-soiling, map 6 detached and worn, railway map of England and Wales crudely repaired. Binding soiled but sound; a good solid copy.
