Travels between 1843 and 1845 in Kuangtung, Fukien, the Chekiang coast, and Shanghai. Fortune (1812-1880) was a Scottish botanist, plant hunter and traveller, known for introducing around 250 new ornamental plants, mainly from China, but also Japan, into the gardens of Britain, Australia and the USA. He also played a role in development of the tea industry in India in the 19th century.

The second edition has an expanded section on tea and a new appendix on transporting plants by sea.

Second edition. 8vo, xxiv, [ii], 420, [i] pp., pictorial half- title, engraved map, 3 tinted lithographed plates (lightly foxed), 12 other illustrations, red half morocco gilt by Winstanley of Manchester, light foxing to plates, lightly rubbed, a very good copy.
