A charming work containing 30 hand-coloured plates of Roman costumes. Filippo Ferrari (1819-1897) was a follower of Bartolmeo Pinelli (1781-1835), a prolific painter of Italian and Roman costumes. Ferrari had originally trained as a sculptor and was employed in stage design being responsible for a well-known scene of the eruption of Vesuvius for La Scala Theatre in Bologna.

First edition; folio (42 x 28.5 cm); 31 hand-coloured engraved plates including title with vignette, some light spotting to tissue-guards, plates clean and bright; contemporary half calf, marbled boards, flat gilt spine with gilt morocco label, slightly rubbed, a very good copy.
