The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection,

the final lifetime edition

Sixth edition, 35th thousand.

The sixth edition of On the Origin of Species was the first in which the word evolution occurs (following its use in The Descent of Man in 1871) and the final edition of Darwin's lifetime. As with previous editions, it was extensively revised by the author and a new chapter was added to refute the views of the Roman Catholic biologist St. George Mivart. Other changes were made to increase its appeal to the general public, including shortening the title by removing 'On' and the use of smaller type to reduce the volume's size.

Sixth edition, 35th thousand; folding chart, 32-page publisher's ads at rear dated February, 1888, a little spotting to the edges of the text block; original green cloth blocked in blind, titles to spine gilt, brown coated endpapers, spine rolled, cloth a little rubbed with some wear at the extremities, a few light spots and marks to the cloth, hinges cracked but firm, very good condition; 458pp.

Freeman, The Works of Charles Darwin 392.
