Samuel Bourne (1834-1912) took up photography at the age of twenty-four in 1858. The son of a Staffordshire landowner he worked in Nottingham as a bank teller. In 1862 Bourne made a trip to India and went into a partnership with Charles Shepherd who already had a photographic studio in Simla. Bourne spent ten years in India (1862-72) carrying his camera to almost every province. As well as taking some striking portraits of Maharajah's and topographical views, Bourne made three trips to the Himalayas, these expeditions alone assuring him a place in photographic history.

Albumen print. Good tonal range, in fair condition, pasted on original card, photographer's number and credit in negative.
