Allemagne. Le Rhin de Bale a Dusseldorf

the first true French Baedeker in original yellow Biedermeier boards

This rare early Baedeker was translated by Professor Klein from the fifth German edition published in the same year and was the second French title to be published by Baedeker. The first was published in 1832 under the title " Voyage du Rhin de Mayence a Cologne." However this is considered to be the first true French Baedeker as much of the guide had been re-written. Baedeker had also introduced more town plans which include Cologne and Strasbourg.

This copy is bound in the attractive yellow pictorial bindings known as Biedermeier, the period 1815-1848 is often (in German-speaking countries) referred to as the Biedermeier period in art and especially with reference to a style of furniture. The architectural and landscape designs on these bindings always represent the area covered in the Baedeker. They are considered to be highly collectible. The map of Mainz and Cologne are copies.

First edition. pp. xxiv, 309, 8 plans and one general map in two parts at the rear, some ink writing inside on a couple of pages, previous owner's inscription on front free endpaper, some spotting and browning throughout; publisher's original yellow pictorial Biedermeier boards, worn along spine and edges; overall a very good copy.
