The History of the French Revolution.

51 hand-coloured steel-engraved plates

An attractive edition of this classic account of the French Revolution by the historian and statesman Adolphe Thiers (1797-1877), President of France from 1871 to 1873 under the Third Republic. Illustrated with 51 hand-coloured steel-engraved plates.

Thiers was the dominating Republican politician of the nineteenth century, a key participant in both the July Revolution of 1830, which overthrew the Bourbon monarch King Charles X in favour of his liberal cousin Louis Philippe, Duke of Orléans, and the Revolution of 1848, which overthrew the July Monarchy and established the Second French Republic. He served as a prime minister in 1836 and 1840, dedicated the Arc de Triomphe, and arranged the return to France of the remains of Napoleon from Saint-Helena.
