Daniel Mendoza.
Oil on panel, after an original by Charles Jean Robineau (18th century French painter).
Daniel Mandoza (1764-1836) was a prominent Jewish-English prizefighter of Sephardic descent in the 1780-90s, Champion of England from 1791 to 1795. He is regarded as the first great scientific boxer, who used his superior ring-craft to overcome stronger and heavier opponents. He'd published two books on the subject ('The Art of Boxing' and 'The Modern Art of Boxing'). Richard Humphreys was Mendoza's early mentor, offering to work as his second in the course of his first fight, but they fell out, and went on to fight a series of grudge bouts - Mendoza refusing his wife's pleas to retire, until he had beaten Humphreys.
Oil on wood panel, framed in a wooden frame; panel size: 20.6 x 19.2 cm; overall size: 30.8 x 23.2 cm.
