Lithographic Sketch of the North Bank of the Thames,

Lithographic Sketch of the North Bank of the Thames,

Trench was a Conservative MP with grand ideas. He proposed several schemes for the embellishment of London, which invariably met with strong opposition and were consequently dropped. The scheme to which this work relates, however, was one of the few to meet with approval but he was not to see it come to fruition as the first stone to the new Embankment was not laid until 1864, five years after his death.

First edition; panoramic folio (26.5 x 67.5 cm); hand-coloured folding map, 10 hand-coloured lithographic plates forming a long panorama, letterpress leaf, very occasional small marginal tear repaired; original paper wrappers, printed title label to upper wrapper, extremities a little frayed, one small tear to upper wrapper repaired, housed in a modern clamshell box, a very good copy.
