To the Central African Lakes and back:
The expedition was sent by the RGS under its African Exploration Fund scheme. It was led by the cartographer Keith Johnston on a route from Dar es Salaam to Lake Nyasa (Malawi) and Tanganyika. Johnston died at an early stage of the journey and Thomson (1858-95) took over. He led his safari successfully to the north end of Lake Nyasa and achieved a useful exploration of Lake Tanganyika.
