Aesop's Fables.
A lovely copy of an important illustrated edition of Aesop's Fables, the text taken from the 1724 edition of L'Estrange's translation. The splendid plates and vignettes admirably reinforce Stephen Gooden's place as one of the leading British line-engravers of the twentieth century.
Haven O'More conceived & formed an extensive collection of remarkable rare books, funded by private investor Michael Davis, known as The Garden Ltd Collection. Following some legal wranglings between the pair, the collection was put into auction via Sotheby's in 1989, where it sold for $16.2 million.
Limited edition, Number 29 of 525 copies signed by the illustrator; large 8vo (255 x 175 mm.); copper-engraved title and a further 11 engravings, including tail-piece, 198 large, historiated engraved initials, all by Gooden, a little offsetting from plates; publisher's vellum by Leighton-Straker in publisher's original plain slip-case, stamped in gold with double fillets, a fox in the centre of the upper cover and grapes and vine-leaves in the angles of both covers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, marbled endpapers, slightest hint of soiling to upper board, a near-fine copy.
