Après-guerre contains four of Tomatsu Shomei's photographic series, made between 1951 and 1960: the first shows the men destined, by virtue of their offices and positions, to carry the burden of the post-war democracy in Japan; the second shows the young generation born after the war; the third comprises portraits of the actors who appear in Matsumoto Toshio's film Siiku, which dealt with the period immediately after the Japanese surrender; the fourth contains work previously published in various magazines, sequenced here to present a of contemporary Japanese society.
It was published as number 5 in the important Eizo no gendai 10-volume series of monographs by contemporary Japanese photographers.
