Annapurna

inscribed by author

Herzog (1919-2012) was a French mountaineer who led this remarkable ascent of Annapurna, one of the highest mountains in the world. This French expedition was the first to climb over 8000 feet. They also explored, reconnoitered and climbed all within one season and without the use of supplemental oxygen. It was a historic climb.

This bestselling book which includes an introduction by Eric Shipton inspired a generation of mountaineers. Inscribed copies are scarce and this copy is inscribed to John Cantwell who was an American doctor to the American football team - the Atlanta Braves. The loose coloured slide appears to be an image of Maurice Herzog.

First American edition. 8vo (22 x 15 cm), inscribed by the author 'For John Davis Cantweell with my best regards, Maurice Herzog, Paris 12.11.98' written on half title, 8 maps and panoramas including the large folding panorama at rear, numerous black and white illustrations; publisher's black backed light blue cloth with spine lettered in silver, original pictorial dust wrapper, corners a little rubbed; overall a very good copy, small coloured slide inserted loose; 316pp
