Evidence.
signed by both authors
In 1975, Mike Mandel and Larry Sultan were awarded an NEA grant to explore photographic archives belonging to over 100 local corporations, government agencies and research institutions. Evidence presents a selection of their findings: photographs previously used merely for recording or instructional purposes presented in a new context. This book accompanied a 1977 exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. In a jointly signed press release for this show, Mandel and Sultan wrote that 'by definition these found objects are records and by implication they are cultural artifacts,' describing the work as being 'a poetic exploration upon the restructuring of imagery.'
First edition, signed by both authors on the title-page at the time of publication; oblong 4to (227 x 247 mm, 9 x 9Âľ in); black-and-white photographs printed in offset, text by Robert F. Forth, light foxing to preliminary and end pages; light grey endpapers, blue cloth-covered boards, spine and upper side lettered in gilt; light rubbing to spine ends and tips, staining on front to top corner. Light discolouration to hinges from binding glue and foxing to top and fore-edge occasionally visible in margins, both fairly common issues with this title, a very good copy; [72]pp.
