John Gossage's working title for this series was 'The Plains of Hell,' after a Cajun fiddle tune that he had not actually heard but had always liked the sound of. He made these photographs in Staten Island and around Syracuse over a month in 1984, choosing to photograph in locations included in the 103c list of hazardous waste sites issued by the Environmental Protection Agency.

First edition, number 78 of 100 copies; 18 type-c photographs (118 x 94 mm, 4¾ x 3¾ in) mounted on archival card sheets (355 x 279 mm, 14 x 11 in) with insults added in pencil and pen by John Gossage, 12pp saddle stapled pamphlet (266 x 177 mm, 10½ x 7 in) with a text by Gus Blaisdell, sheet of US letter paper with a short by Peter Lloyd in a signed and numbered envelope, in the publisher' wooden display box with an acrylic face, fine.
