The Folk Guerrilla concerts in Shinjuku were a small but significant part of the broader cultural and political movements in Japan during the 1960s, which also saw massive student protests, labour strikes, and other forms of activism. From the spring until autumn of 1969, musicians associated with Beheiren, an anti-Vietnam War activist group, staged a series of impromptu concerts in Shinjuku Station's West Exit Plaza. These musicians became known as the 'folk guerillas; their concerts morphed into weekly rallies, attracting protestors from other protest movements. Ōuchida Keiya made a documentary film about the protests called '69 Haru-aki chika hiroba ['69 Spring-Autumn Underground Plaza] (1970).
