Arabia.

A rare and attractive map focusing on the Arabian Peninsula, but also including Iraq, Jordan, Palestine, Syria and Asiatic Turkey. It shows boundaries and occupied territories as they were after World War I (1914-1918), physical features, principal cities, roads networks, communication lines, and maritime navigation distance. The inset map at the top right shows the Aden Protectorate and part of South-Western Yemen (scale 1:1,825,000). Also contains early appearances of Abu Dhabi and Dubai on full peninsula maps.

Gross (1857-1958) was a Hungarian-Jewish immigrant to the UK who founded Geographia Ltd in the early 1900s in Fleet Street, producing street maps and atlases. He was forced to dissolve the business after financial trouble, but he successfully set up again in America until the company was merged with Collins Bartholomew.

Scarce. Just 4 copies worldwide and only 1 in the UK (Library of Congress, Minnesota, NYU Abu Dhabi, and Manchester). Not in BL. The 1956 reprint from when Gross emigrated to America is in 4 further US institutions.

Original colour-printed lithograph map of the Arabian Peninsula with an inset map of the Aden Protectorate. Sheet size: 65 x 50 cm.
