Presentation copy, twice inscribed by the author, of this first edition of Waugh's unfinished work started in July 1939 and interrupted by the Second World War.
The first inscription in red ink reads, 'A.C.M.P. [recipient not identified] / Your comments please / G.S.O. III 1(a) 4/5'. The second in blue ink reads, 'Robert Henriques / from Evelyn Waugh, 4/5/43.' The recipient here was a commando, and advisor on Judaism to Waugh in his writing of Helena.

First edition, first impression, one of 500 copies, twice inscribed by the author; 8vo; occasional faint spotting, else unmarked internally; publisher's red cloth, gilt lettering to spine, with the original dust-jacket, heavy spotting, occasional chips and nicks, spine browned, else very good.
