Phillipson (b.1942) is the current Emeritus Professor of African Archaeology at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and was Director of the Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology of the University of Cambridge for 25 years. His most notable work has been in Ethiopia, particularly on the archaeology of Aksumite sites.

First edition; large 8vo (26 x 18 cm); 71 illustrations including portrait frontispiece and many plates by C. Whymper and others, six folding maps at rear, a little very light spotting to frontis., bookplate to front pastedown; publisher's red cloth, gilt lettering to vignette and spine, spine a little faded and professionally restored, a very good copy; xvi, 471pp.
