Black Poppies in Cement

This exclusive edition of multi-dimensional artworks are the result of meticulous experimentation with new technologies and craftsmanship. Sultan was originally inspired by poppies worn on Veterans Day to honour fallen soldiers at Flanders, Belgium during World War I.

Throughout Sultan's career, he has been drawn to everyday materials which could be picked up in his local hardware store – ranging from concrete to Masonite to automotive paints. Lending character and affordability, these media allow him to make large scale works with thickness and weight.

Poppies in Cement revisits Sultan's studio practice, incorporating industrial materials into the art of edition making – offering a contrast of glossy automotive paint with a textured, cement overlay across five different colourways.

Acrylic and concrete high-rendered print on aluminium, 2024, signed and numbered by the artist on the verso, from the edition of 20, published by LITO Editions, 100 x 100 x 6 cm (39¼ x 39¼ x 2¼ in.)
