Lettres sur la Grèce,

Savary left Alexandria for Asia Minor and the Greek islands in 1779. 'He spent about six months on Crete and also visits several islands of the Dodecanese (Simi, Cos, Cassos and Castellorizo). The French consul of Rhodes, Pontier, supplied him with information on that island' (Navari). He returned home to France in 1780, staying at the house of Madame Le Monnier, to whom these letters, which centre on the actual condition of the places visited, are addressed.

(21 x 13.5 cm). 362 pp., 2 folding maps, a few engraved vignettes in text, marbled endpapers and edges; full contemporary calf, flat spine in 6 compartments with upper joint expertly repaired, single red label, gilt flower centre tools, gilt dentelles, outer edges gilt, some loss of leather, upper joint starting, still a very good copy.
