Centennial Print, Judson Memorial Church
Claes Oldenburg's Statement on Centennial Print (Axsom, R. and Platzker, D., 1997, p. 380):
"I wanted to make a symbol of the active Church, a walking or 'rockin'' cross, which also happens to be a 'J,' a birthday candle and a newspaper collage of the world around the church.
Selected activities of the Judson over the years are typed on my 1926 typewriter and scattered like street signs over the 'newspaper cross.'
There's also a personal reference to the work in outlined newspaper collage I was doing when I showed and performed at the Judson Gallery in 1959-60."
Screenprint in colours on BFK Rives paper, 1990, signed and numbered in pencil, from the edition of 100 (there are also 10 artist' proofs), printed by Maurel Studios, New York, published by Brooke Alexander Editions, New York, to benefit Judson Memorial Church, New York, sheet: 1118 x 762 mm (44 x 30 in.)
Axsom and Platzker 218.1
