Travels in Russia, Persia, Turkey, and Greece, in 1828-9.
Scarce privately printed account of the author's travels through the region at the time of the Russo-Turkish War. The section on Greece includes information on the principal figures of the Revolution. Alcock, a Liberal Member of Parliament, was unimpressed by Constantinople, but offers a vivid account of one of the many conflagrations in the city, and the efficient work of the French Navy to pull down houses in the path of the fire with cables.
First edition, 8vo, viii, 227 pp., folding aquatint frontispiece engraved by William Daniell after General Monteith, large folding map hand-coloured in outline, original reddish-brown cloth, covers faded, rebacked preserving original label, a very good copy.
Abbey (Travel), 361; Blackmer 14; Koç II, 282; Droulia 1957. Not in Sutton.
