The fourth Earl of Carnarvon is better remembered for holding various positions over his lifetime such as cabinet minister, Colonial Secretary and Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland. However, he began his academic life at Oxford University, with a first Class Honours degree in Classics. Before his translation of Prometheus Bound, he published his version of The Agamemnon in 1879.
